Randomization for map design. In my opinion one of the best ways to get your map looking good and that 5 in the Map Design category at Empires Heaven.
This is how I do it: Firstly create some random elevation and make sure it looks a little realistic, don't spend very much time on this though. Then you'll want to choose what types of trees you're going to use. Sometimes a mix is nice, but usually I go for one type of tree and randomly place it throughout the area that I will be applying the map design to. Now open up terrain, and place almost all the different types of terrain (In tiny) that correspond with the look you're trying to create, it may seem a bad idea, but trust me, later on it'll look great, and if it doesn't you can always replace it with a different terrain. After you've done that, go World Player in the units section and randomly choose what types of environment enhances you want to place, normally it's best to use almost all of them, if you don't like the way it ends up looking than you can just delete the things you don't like. Now survey the area you have changed. How does it look? Does something not fit in? Take it out. Does something look bad? Change it. Once you've created something that looks nice you can add Nature units or whatever else you think would look nice. Here's an example of the finished product:

I hope this helps to improve your map design.
